Depression is a consistent and intense state of sadness that is negatively impacting your life. Your feelings of sadness can last for weeks, months or even years. Feeling down or sad some of the time is normal and it does not necessarily mean you are depressed.

 

Depression Symptoms

Recognising depression is the first step in getting help. Below is a list of some common symptoms you may be experiencing if you are depressed.

 

Changes to your mood

  • Feeling sad
  • Feeling numb
  • Getting irritable easily
  • Feeling guilty.

 

Changes in your thinking

  • Being very self-critical
  • Thinking you cannot cope
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Poor focus and concentration
  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm.

 

Changes in your behaviour

  • Losing interest in things and activities you used to enjoy
  • Lacking motivation
  • Crying a lot
  • Losing your temper more than usual.

 

Physical changes

  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headaches
  • Stomach aches
  • Feeling run down.

You may experience these symptoms from time to time, but if you have depression the feelings are severe and do not go away quickly.
